Jennifer Lawrence has joined Zach Cregger's The Flood, an original sci-fi thriller at Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. Lawrence will lead the film, which is dated for release on August 11, 2028.
The Flood centers on a deep-space exploration team aboard the vessel Spiritus Mundi. After detecting a recurring signal from a remote planet, the crew investigates and encounters a bizarre alien artifact that warps time, reality, and their minds. Cregger wrote the screenplay in five days.
The project is produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment alongside Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment. According to Dark Horizons, the project originated at Netflix before moving to Warner Bros. over a dispute about theatrical distribution.
Warner Bros. Motion Picture chairs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy called Lawrence "one of the most gifted and compelling actors working today," adding they were "thrilled to have her at the center of Zach's bold and wholly original vision for The Flood." Cregger said: "Jennifer is one of a kind, and I'm beyond excited to see her in this role."
The casting reunites Cregger with New Line Cinema following the 2025 success of Weapons, which earned $270 million globally according to The Wrap. Cregger has drawn loose comparisons to Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, saying: "I'm not comparing it to 2001, because I think 2001 is a true masterpiece... there's some similarity with Flood." Production is expected to begin in Europe in early 2027.
