James Gunn confirmed on Threads on October 4 that he is already writing his next film. The announcement came as the assembly cut of Man of Tomorrow, the Superman sequel, reached completion ahead of the film's July 9, 2027 theatrical release.

When asked whether he was ready to begin his next project, Gunn replied: "Already in it. I had to do something while I was waiting for the assembly!"

He offered no title, no genre, no studio. The project remains entirely unspecified. In the absence of confirmation, speculation has filled the gap. According to World of Reel, journalist Jamie Williams has reported that Gunn has already begun writing Superman 3. A "World's Finest" Batman-Superman team-up has also circulated as a leading theory among observers of the expanding DC Universe.

Gunn is the first person to hold the co-CEO position at DC Studios while also directing films in the universe he oversees. The pattern is now clear: he writes while he waits for the edit. What the next project actually is remains the only open question.
