The search for the next James Bond has a name nobody saw coming. According to Page Six, Jack Barton, 31, has emerged as the frontrunner among six finalists being evaluated for Bond 26, the Amazon MGM reboot that Denis Villeneuve is directing from a screenplay by Steven Knight.
Barton graduated from the Oxford School of Drama in 2018. His credits include a supporting role in Yorgos Lanthimos's Poor Things (2023) and recurring television work across seven episodes of SAS: Rogue Heroes and a run on Heartstopper. He had not previously appeared in Bond speculation. The parallel being drawn in trade coverage is to Daniel Craig in 2005: a credible actor with limited marquee recognition, chosen for reasons that become clear only in retrospect.
The wider shortlist includes Jack Lowden, Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Paul Mescal, and Harris Dickinson. According to ComicBook, the filmmakers are looking for an actor capable of committing to at least four films, with most candidates in their late 20s to early 30s. Formal screen tests are scheduled for September 2026. Producer Amy Pascal has said that "the end of the year is a good bet" for a casting announcement, according to Variety.
Villeneuve and producers Pascal and David Heyman have taken personal control of the process, with Villeneuve reported to be contacting shortlisted actors directly. Nina Gold has been installed as casting director, replacing Debbie McWilliams, who oversaw the franchise across the Craig era. The change signals a deliberate reset of the supporting infrastructure around the role.
