The Annecy International Animation Film Festival opens this Saturday in France with 11 animated features competing for the Cristal. More than 18,000 accredited attendees from 120 countries are expected, alongside a MIFA market hosting approximately 2,700 companies.

Six of the 11 competing features premiered at the 79th Cannes Film Festival in May, reflecting animation's growing presence on the international festival circuit.

Louis Clichy's Iron Boy, known in French as Le Corset, won the Special Jury Prize in Cannes' Un Certain Regard section. It marks the first animated feature to win a prize in that sidebar. Sony Pictures Classics holds North and Latin American rights, with a France release set for October 14. Hand painted and set in rural France, the film follows a boy of eleven navigating a cold and distant father on the family farm. It is Clichy's solo directorial debut after years as a Pixar animator on WALL-E and Up.

Phuong Mai Nguyen's In Waves enters competition after becoming the first animated film to open Cannes Critics' Week. Netflix secured global rights outside France in a deal reported in the mid seven figure range. Adapted from AJ Dungo's graphic memoir, the film stars Academy Award nominee Stephanie Hsu and BAFTA winner Will Sharpe, and traces a romance between a skateboarder and a surfer as illness tests their bond.

Other competition titles include Sebastien Laudenbach's Viva Carmen, Kohei Kadowaki's We Are Aliens from Japan, Chinese entries Nobody and Tana, and the World War II-set The Violonist. The festival opens Sunday with the world premiere of Illumination's Minions & Monsters, directed by Pierre Coffin.

Honorary Cristal awards will go to animator and filmmaker Mike Judge and stop motion duo Brothers Quay. Festival artistic director Marcel Jean observed that despite ongoing talk of an industry downturn, the competition speaks for itself: "It's not evident in the feature films that were completed across this past year." The Annecy Cristal is widely regarded as the most significant animation award on the international circuit and carries consistent weight heading into Oscar season.
