Alejandro G. Iñárritu's first feature in four years arrives this fall. Warner Bros. released the full trailer for Digger on July 13, giving audiences their first extended look at Tom Cruise in the most disguised role of his career.
Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, a billionaire oil magnate whose arrogance sets off an ecological disaster. Summoned by the President, played by John Goodman, to avert the catastrophe he triggered, Rockwell becomes an unlikely candidate to save the world. Warner Bros. describes the film as "a comedy of catastrophic proportions." The ensemble includes Riz Ahmed, Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Sophie Wilde, Emma D'Arcy, and Michael Stuhlbarg.
Cruise spent months in heavy prosthetics: a pot belly, thinning white hair worn in a combover, and a thick Southern accent. The preparation extended to the page. "Alejandro took several days during which he was just reading the script to me," Cruise said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, "and I'm listening to everything that's in his mind, so that I can understand that." Iñárritu reflected on Cruise's commitment: "The transformation he went through was astonishing. 'Alejandro, it took me 40 years to become this character,' he told me once."
The screenplay is written by Iñárritu alongside Nicolás Giacobone, Sabina Berman, and Alexander Dinelaris Jr. The film was shot in the United Kingdom on VistaVision 35mm. Legendary Pictures co-produces with Cruise's TC Productions and Iñárritu's M Productions.
Digger opens in theaters exclusively on October 2.
