Haley Lu Richardson has joined the cast of Miami Vice '85, the Universal Pictures reboot directed by Joseph Kosinski. No details about her role have been disclosed, according to Deadline. She is the latest addition to an ensemble anchored by Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler.
Kosinski, whose recent credits include Top Gun: Maverick and F1, is directing from a screenplay by Dan Gilroy and Eric Warren Singer. The film draws on the original television series created by Anthony Yerkovich, with the story rooted in the pilot episode “Brother’s Keeper.” Jordan plays Ricardo Tubbs and Butler plays Sonny Crockett, the roles originated by Philip Michael Thomas and Don Johnson. The cast also includes Walton Goggins, Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, John Leguizamo, Danny Ramirez, André Holland, Dominic Sessa, Andrew Schulz, and Edi Gathegi. Michael Mann, who directed the 2006 film, serves as executive producer alongside original series creator Yerkovich.
Richardson has been shaping one of the more intentional careers of her generation. After breaking out in The Edge of Seventeen and Five Feet Apart, she has leaned into riskier work: leading Peacock’s Cold War thriller series Ponies, starring in Gore Verbinski’s Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, and headlining Kogonada’s Sundance title Zi.
Kosinski is shooting in IMAX. Universal has set Miami Vice ’85 for May 19, 2028.
