Greg Kwedar, director of the acclaimed 2024 prison drama Sing Sing, is set to helm Free Byrd for Artists Equity. Dwayne Johnson will star as a Las Vegas motorcycle stuntman who conceals a dementia diagnosis while risking everything on one final jump, according to The Wrap.
The original script comes from Jon Boyer. A previous draft was written by Michael Schwartz and Tyler Nilson. Kwedar is completing a fresh rewrite for production. Gil Netter, a two-time Best Picture nominee, is producing alongside Fifth Season, Seven Bucks Productions, and Ethos.
Johnson described the project in his own words: "'Free Byrd' is a gift in many ways. Emblematic of life's sacred beauty, as well as life's harsh reality."
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, the creative leads behind Artists Equity, called Kwedar "one of the most exciting writer-directors working today." The production is a joint effort between Artists Equity, Johnson's own Seven Bucks Productions, and Ethos.
For Kwedar, the attachment marks a significant shift in scale. Sing Sing was built from intimacy and precise character work. Free Byrd asks him to bring that same exactness to a larger canvas, one anchored by one of Hollywood's most recognizable stars.
