Alfonso Gomez-Rejon is set to direct the pilot and second episode of Afterlife with Archie, Disney+'s new live-action series, according to Deadline. He will also executive produce both episodes.
The show is based on Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla's comic run of the same name, first published by Archie Comics in October 2013. The series follows a teen witch's spell that goes wrong and turns Riverdale into a zombie-overrun apocalypse. Aguirre-Sacasa, who created Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, serves as showrunner and executive producer through Muckle Man Productions. Disney+ greenlit the series in July 2026, with a Halloween 2027 premiere targeted.
Gomez-Rejon's horror instincts predate his feature work. He directed multiple episodes of American Horror Story and received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries or Movie for American Horror Story: Coven. His feature debut came with the slasher remake The Town That Dreaded Sundown (2014). He then won both the Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at Sundance for Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (2015), before directing The Current War (2017) and the Amazon Prime limited series Hunters.
The series is also produced by Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, alongside Archie Comics Studios. No cast has been announced.
