Takashi Yamazaki's Godzilla Minus Zero screens Saturday at Alice Tully Hall as the Spotlight Gala of the 64th New York Film Festival. The premiere places the sequel inside a prestige festival corridor typically reserved for art house contenders. Yamazaki wrote, directed, and oversaw the visual effects himself.
The film continues in 1949, two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One. Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe return alongside Yuki Yamada, with Masami Nagasawa, Jun Kunimura, and Min Tanaka joining the cast. King Ghidorah enters the story. Visual effects are again handled by Shirogumi, the studio behind the original.
Godzilla Minus Zero is the first Japanese production filmed for IMAX, with sequences composed natively in the 1.43:1 format. The decision positions the film as more than a franchise continuation. Toho greenlit the sequel in November 2024, roughly nine months after Minus One took the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects, becoming the first Japanese film to win in that category.
GKIDS, now a Toho subsidiary, releases the film in North America on November 6, three days after its Japan premiere. Whether the sequel reaches beyond the VFX category is the question Saturday's screening will begin to answer.
