Warner Bros. has set June 1, 2029 as the release date for Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest, the franchise's first theatrical film. Owen Harris will direct. Beau Willimon will write the screenplay.
The film is based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood and centers on Aegon I Targaryen, the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms. The story covers Aegon's conquest of six of the seven kingdoms of Westeros, alongside his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya and their three dragons: Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes. According to Deadline, this marks the first time Aegon I has been depicted on screen.
Harris is known for directing episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which received an Outstanding Drama Series Emmy nomination in 2026, and landmark Black Mirror entries including "San Junipero." Willimon created House of Cards, received an Oscar nomination for co-writing The Ides of March, and wrote six episodes of Andor.
The project was first announced at CinemaCon in April 2026 without a director, writer, or release date. Tuesday's announcement fills all three gaps at once. The film will be the earliest entry in the franchise chronologically, predating House of the Dragon by several generations.
Whether the screenplay will work closely with Martin or deviate from the source material has not been confirmed. The conquest story, encompassing three continent-crossing dragons and the forging of the Iron Throne, would be one of the largest-scale events the franchise has ever put to screen.
