Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Digger opens in international markets today and arrives in North America on October 2. Released by Warner Bros. in Dolby Cinema, IMAX, and VistaVision formats, the film is his first English-language feature since The Revenant, eleven years ago.
Tom Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, an oil tycoon described by Warner Bros. as "the most powerful man in the world" who "embarks on a frantic mission to prove that he is humanity's savior before the disaster he's unleashed destroys everything." The ensemble includes Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, and Emma D'Arcy. Emmanuel Lubezki shot on 35mm in VistaVision. Cosmo Sheldrake composed the score in his feature film debut.
Reviews arrived divided. At 52% on Rotten Tomatoes from 117 critics and a 44 out of 100 on Metacritic, the film sits in contested territory. Bilge Ebiri at Vulture called it "a torturous experience, sometimes purposefully so." Randy Myers at the San Jose Mercury News gave it four out of four stars. David Ehrlich at IndieWire gave it a C+.
Iñárritu began developing the project after completing The Revenant. Talks with Cruise started in 2019 during Top Gun: Maverick production. The film was officially announced in February 2024, with principal photography running from November 2024 through late April 2025 at Pinewood Studios in the UK, on a budget between $160 million and $180 million.
