Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film, according to Deadline. Variety independently confirmed the project on October 8. The announcement marks the latest studio bet on a major gaming IP, and one of the more consequential ones.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the producer behind the Transformers franchise, is attached to produce. CD Projekt Red, the Warsaw-based studio that made the game, is co-producing alongside di Bonaventura and retains creative involvement in the adaptation.
Michal Nowakowski, joint CEO of CD Projekt Red, addressed the deal in a post on X: "We're excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise."
Released in 2020 after years of development, Cyberpunk 2077 sold over 40 million copies worldwide. A troubled launch was followed by a sustained recovery: years of patches culminated in the 2023 expansion Phantom Liberty, which substantially rebuilt the game's reputation. A sequel is reportedly in development at the studio.
No writer, director, or cast has been announced. How the film will approach the source material remains open. The game's story centers on mercenary V in the dense corporate sprawl of Night City, with Keanu Reeves appearing as the digital ghost Johnny Silverhand. Netflix's Edgerunners, set in the same universe, arrived in 2022 to strong reviews. Whether the film will adapt that main storyline or explore new territory, as Edgerunners did, has not been confirmed.
