Netflix and SEGA announced a multi-title collaboration on September 14, 2026. Three projects are in development: a live-action Crazy Taxi comedy film, a Sonic animated series aimed at preschool viewers, and a live-action crime drama based on Stranger Than Heaven, an upcoming game from RGG Studio set in Japan in the early 20th century.
The Crazy Taxi film goes to Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. The pair wrote the 2025 Naked Gun reboot. Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher of Original Film produce alongside SEGA’s Toru Nakahara. No director is attached. No release date has been set.
Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s VP of Nonfiction and Transmedia, described the appeal of adapting legacy IP: “Great games already have what every adaptation is chasing — characters people love, worlds they know by heart, and fandoms that show up.”
SEGA’s president and COO Shuji Utsumi framed the deal around fidelity: “The fandoms of these games deserve storytelling that honors what makes each title special.”
Moritz and Ascher were direct about the target audience: “This film is for anyone who’s spent hours behind the wheel of a yellow cab on their Dreamcast.”
A new game, Crazy Taxi: World Tour, is due in 2027. The simultaneous film and game revival points to a coordinated IP relaunch.
