Hulu confirmed a series order for Ryan Coogler's The X-Files on October 13, 2026, eight months after the network picked up the pilot. The two-hour pilot was shot on 65mm large-format film in Vancouver. The original series filmed its first five seasons in the same city.

Coogler wrote and directed the pilot under his five-year exclusive Disney television deal. Proximity Media, Onyx Collective, and 20th Television produce. Chris Carter, creator of the original series, joins as a non-writing executive producer.

Danielle Deadwyler (Till, The Piano Lesson) and Himesh Patel (Yesterday, Station Eleven, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey) star as new FBI agents assigned to a long-shuttered division for unexplained phenomena. Jennifer Yale (Legion, See) is showrunner. Ludwig Göransson scores; Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who won the Best Cinematography Oscar for Sinners at the March 2026 ceremony, shot the pilot.

The pilot guest cast includes Amy Madigan, Steve Buscemi, Ben Foster, Devery Jacobs, Tantoo Cardinal, and Lochlyn Munro. No episode count or premiere date has been set; additional photography is expected to begin in 2027 at the earliest.

"I've loved The X-Files for a long time," Coogler said in an official statement. He also said he wanted to "honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people." Sinners won four Oscars from sixteen nominations at this year's ceremony. The reboot is Coogler's first television project.
