Paramount's Call of Duty adaptation has its universe. Director Peter Berg confirmed at the Call of Duty in Culture Panel at Fanatics Fest in New York that the film will be set in the Modern Warfare world, ruling out the Black Ops and World at War timelines.
The screenplay is written by Berg and Taylor Sheridan, creator of the Yellowstone franchise and writer of Sicario and Hell or High Water. David Glasser of 101 Studios produces alongside Berg and Sheridan. The project was first announced in September 2025; this weekend's panel appearance marks the first meaningful creative disclosure since then.
The Modern Warfare setting draws from a franchise thread that began with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007, which introduced characters including Captain Price, Soap MacTavish, and Ghost. Both the original trilogy and the 2019 reboot of the same name remain possible source material, according to Collider.
No cast has been announced. The film targets a June 2028 theatrical release, timed to the 25th anniversary of the Call of Duty franchise's debut in 2003.
Berg's background in grounded military action — Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, Patriots Day — pairs with Sheridan's reputation for politically inflected genre writing. The combination marks an unusual creative bet on a franchise more often associated with spectacle than texture.
