The weekend of September 26 to 28 saw the domestic chart populated by a rerelease, two holdovers, and two new debuts, with four films crossing $19 million.
Marvel's Avengers: Endgame Encore led with $26 million domestically and $86 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. That global figure makes it the second-biggest rerelease in cinema history, trailing only Titanic 3D (2012).
Zach Cregger's Resident Evil held firm in second with $23.3 million in its second weekend, crossing $103.5 million domestically. The horror-franchise reboot, which opened to $60 million last week, has now outperformed every previous entry in the series.
Two new wide releases landed within a million of each other. David Ayer's Heart of the Beast, starring Brad Pitt as a veteran stranded in the Alaskan wilderness, debuted to $20 million domestically and $50.1 million globally. The Paramount drama carries an $82 million budget but an 87% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A-minus CinemaScore. A24's Primetime, directed by Lance Oppenheim and starring Robert Pattinson as TV host Chris Hansen, earned $19.2 million from 2,863 venues. The third-best opening in A24 history, behind Backrooms and Civil War. At a $15 million production cost, it opened in the black.
DreamWorks Animation's Forgotten Island rounded out the top five with $12.8 million.
