Zach Cregger's Resident Evil reboot opened to $60 million domestically this weekend, more than doubling the franchise's previous record. The prior high-water mark was Resident Evil: Afterlife, which opened to $26.6 million in 2010. The new film earned $108 million worldwide in its debut on a $75 million production budget, playing in 3,684 theaters.
Practical Magic 2 fell sharply in its second weekend, earning $12.1 million, a decline of roughly 60 percent from its opening, for a $50 million domestic total.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day held at third in its eighth weekend, adding $6.5 million to bring its domestic run to $944.5 million.
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey continued its long climb at fourth with $4.9 million. The film surpassed Incredibles 2 to rank 16th all-time domestically at $609.8 million, and has moved into 11th place globally.
Coyote vs. Acme rounded out the top five with $4.5 million, bringing its cumulative domestic total to $54.8 million.
