Angel Studios has acquired domestic distribution rights to Rode to Ruin, a Western thriller written by R. Dean McCreary. Michael Keaton directs and stars alongside Morgan Freeman, with international presales launching at TIFF: The Market in Toronto this week.
Keaton plays retired U.S. Marshal Henry Tillman, who has spent forty years pursuing the man who murdered his wife. Freeman plays that man, Joseph Mulberry, an aging outlaw whose memory is beginning to fail. The story turns on what both men confront when the pursuit finally ends.
Keaton situated the film in the company of genre-transcending predecessors. "When I first read it, I thought, this is really good, and there is more here for Morgan and me to mine together," he said. "Just as The Shawshank Redemption is not simply a prison movie, Rode to Ruin is not simply a Western. It is a story with a lot of layers that happens to unfold in the West."
McCreary described the screenplay as "a deeply human story about forgiveness, revenge, redemption and the choices people make when time is running out."
The film marks the first on-screen collaboration between Keaton and Freeman since 1988's Clean and Sober, a gap of nearly four decades. Keaton previously directed The Merry Gentleman (2008) and Knox Goes Away (2023). Angel Studios, whose recent titles include Sound of Freedom, Homestead, and Young Washington, is targeting a 2027 theatrical release.
