Simon Stone's Ian Charleson biopic has BFI London, Toronto, and Focus Features' November window. The Best Actor case is already being made.

Toronto's full schedule, released Wednesday, confirmed Elsinore in Special Presentations for the 51st edition of TIFF, running September 10-20. Andrew Scott is also set to participate in TIFF's "In Conversation With" series alongside the film's screenings.

Elsinore is directed by Simon Stone (BAFTA-nominated for The Dig) and written by Stephen Beresford (BAFTA winner for Pride). The film depicts the final chapter of actor Ian Charleson's life. Charleson, best known for Chariots of Fire (1981), performed Hamlet at the National Theatre in London in 1989 while living with AIDS. He died in January 1990 at age 40. The performance is remembered among the most celebrated Hamlet interpretations of the twentieth century.

Scott plays Charleson and serves as a producer on the film. Olivia Colman plays Charleson's doctor. The ensemble cast also includes Billie Piper, Johnny Flynn, Luke Thompson, Joe Locke, Juliet Stevenson, Adeel Akhtar, and Peter Mullan. The film runs 104 minutes.

Elsinore will open the 70th BFI London Film Festival as its opening night gala on October 7 at the Royal Festival Hall, marking its European premiere. "Anchored by Andrew Scott's astounding central performance, few films will leave a lasting impression on audiences this year quite like Elsinore," the BFI's artistic director said at the announcement. Focus Features releases the film in the US on November 20 in limited release, expanding wider over Thanksgiving. StudioCanal handles the UK release, set for January 29, 2027.
