Sony Pictures' adaptation of Helldivers has a new frontrunner. Alan Ritchson is in talks to star in the video game adaptation, stepping into the role vacated by Jason Momoa, who departed the project in June. Justin Lin remains attached to direct.
Lin will also produce through his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner alongside Hutch Parker and PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan. Gary Dauberman, whose credits include the It and Annabelle films, wrote the script. According to Deadline, if a deal closes, Ritchson would play one of the helldivers, with additional casting still to be announced.
The commercial logic for the property is difficult to ignore. Helldivers 2 sold over 12 million copies on PlayStation 5 and PC within four months of its February 2024 launch, making it one of the fastest-selling PlayStation titles in history. Sony and PlayStation Productions have built the blueprint: the Uncharted film grossed $407 million globally, and The Last of Us earned Emmy recognition across its HBO run. Helldivers extends that model into multiplayer military sci-fi.
Ritchson has built one of Hollywood's steadier action presences through Amazon's Reacher. Lin, whose work on the Fast & Furious franchise spans four entries, brings franchise-scale muscle to Sony's most ambitious video game adaptation yet.
Helldivers is scheduled to hit theaters November 10, 2027.
