The domestic box office crossed $8 billion this week. Box Office Mojo data through October 15 shows a running total of $8,007,283,133 across 605 releases. Two months remain in the calendar year.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the year's defining gross. Sony's summer entry has accumulated $957 million domestically, the highest total ever recorded for a single film in the domestic market, surpassing the $936 million run of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film opened in late June to the largest domestic opening weekend in history and has continued generating revenue into October.

The milestone did not arrive on one title alone. Q1 2026 opened with $1.77 billion in North American grosses, the strongest first-quarter performance since the pandemic began, according to Screendollars data. Advanced Television had projected 2026 would "likely be the strongest DBO year of the post-Covid era," according to No Film School.

For context: 2025 finished its full calendar year with $8.65 billion. 2024 ended at $8.57 billion. 2023, the previous high point of the post-pandemic era, reached $8.9 billion. 2026 has cleared $8 billion with November and December still ahead, putting it on pace to surpass all three.

The industry's long-stated benchmark remains a return to annual domestic grosses above $10 billion. Pre-pandemic, 2018 reached $11.89 billion. A $10 billion 2026 would require approximately $2 billion over the final eleven weeks. In 2023, the comparable period contributed roughly $2.5 billion.
